Human presence and contact are irreplaceable, which is something we have learned in the past two years of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Сьогоднішнє відзначення відрізняється від минулих сумним фактом що 24 лютого цього року, Росія почала повно-масштабну ґеноцидну війну проти України. Від того часу, до Канади переїхало багато біженців з України, декотрі з них поселились в Монреалі.
Нас, студентів, сьогодні об’єднує факт що більшість з нас народилася в Канаді, але завдяки нашим батькам, ми виросли в українській громаді i мали нагоду ходити до української суботньої школи та до CУМ-y або Пласту, на табори та різні заняття: спів, танці, ручні роботи і т.д.. Мимо того що ми часто йшли проти нашої волі, без бажання та з протестом (complained about waking up early on Saturday morning, when « all my friends were sleeping in! »), ми вивчили нашу мову, культуру, вміємо читати і писати по українськи, знаємо історію нашої батьківщини. Наші батьки за це заслуговують признання і подяку. Взагалі, ми дуже щасливі що в Монреалі є українська школа. Я тепер живу у місті Квебек і там ще нема Père Marquette або George Vanier … Сподіваюся, що незадовго і там буде!
To put things into perspective, since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, over 2 000 schools have been hit by bombs and shelling, over 300 of them have been completely destroyed, resulting in over 700,000 displaced Ukrainian students. Russia stained the education of students and mercilessly stole the childhood from young kids.
And yet, Ukrainian students do not give up! I’m sure many of you have seen pictures of graduating high school students, in Chernihiv, posing near their bombed-out school, or the images of teachers with elementary school children in underground bomb shelters or in the metro continuing their daily lessons. We, as Canadian Ukrainian students, should take notice of their courage, their resilience, and do our part from here to help them during this unimaginably difficult period.
As mentioned, we were fortunate enough to be exposed to our Ukrainian culture and heritage, and, for most of us, our basic needs were fulfilled when we were growing up.
Кілька тижнів тому я організувала з друзями два повні дні презентацій в університеті для малолітніх дітей (4-5 років). Цей проект називався : Hôpital des Nounours: наша місія була їм представити лікарську опіку, щоб вони не боялися лікарів, щеплення, хірургії, рентгенів, тa всіляких тестів. Їхнє захоплення, зацікавленість та усмішки зігріли моє серце; it made every minute of work in organizing this event worth it! Але мене найбільше вразило, коли під час презентації про гігієну зубів, не одна, але кілька дітей нам сказали, що вони не мають щітки до зубів…These comments really made me think about the lack of equal opportunities for kids growing up here, even in Canada!
Не хочу засмутити вас фактом що ми не можемо змінити світ сьогодні. Але кожен з нас повинен старатися поставити цеглу в стіну : put a brick in the wall, щоб покращити життя нашим ближнім. B цьому тижні впав перший сніг (багато!), а це означає, що наближається Різдво, AKA сезон подарунків! Я хотіла б заохотити вас цього року зупинитися i подумати заки будемо писати наші списки бажань, чи нам справді потрібен ще один светр або електронні пристрої? Замість цього, я пропоную щоб ми пожертвувати гроші на зимний одяг Українським Збройним Силам або для новоприбулих матерів та їх дітей, котрим справді потрібен новий светр або іграшка, щоб хоч трошки легше було їм пережити цей родинний сезон, коли більшість їхніх батьків залишилися в Україні…Росія вкрала у дітей їхнє дитинство i розлучила сім’ї.
Величезна кількість українців, особливо матерів і дітей, приїхали до Монреалю, до міста Квебек, і до інших провінції Канади, вони приїхали не знаючи мови, не знаючи наших звичаїв, не маючи жодної підтримки. Вони пережили і бачили такі жахливі події, ці образи назавжди залишаться в їхній пам’яті. На жаль, ми не можемо це змінити, але ми можемо дати їм нашу підтримку, відкриваючи наші серця. Моя сестра і її чоловік прийматимуть до своєї хати маму з трьома дітьми з України, котрі приїжджають на наступному тижні. У всіх нас немає можливості зробити це, але ми можемо відкрити свої серця багатьма іншими способами. Познайомитися з ними, включити до нашого кола друзів. Ми тут виросли, то тепер ми повинні їм представити нашу канадську громаду, українську школу, Сум, Пласт, допомогти їм відчути себе вдома. Практична допомога теж дуже важлива: going to appointments with them (we know the ups and downs of our medical system, our dear SAAQ for a driver’s licence, signing up for French lessons, opening bank accounts and simply being an interpreter for any of the multiple needs that arise when you move to a foreign country). В єдності сила народу! Ми мусимо, особливо тепер під час війни, більше, ніж будь-коли раніше, триматися разом. This can only be positive! Це підсилить нашу громаду! We can also use this as a great opportunity to brush up on our Ukrainian language, our washed out Ukrainian can definitely use some practice!
Une autre façon pour nous, étudiants et étudiantes dans des établissements français ou anglais, est de répandre la vérité et de lutter contre la désinformation. Combien de fois ai-je entendu dans mon entourage récemment: « Hey Sophie, ça va mieux en Ukraine, oui ? J’en entends plus parler aux nouvelles ? C’est fini alors la guerre, oui? » C’est exactement à ces moments que nous devons prendre notre courage à deux mains et fermement divulguer la vérité : « NON, ce n’est pas fini! La guerre continue et des gens innocents perdent leur vie chaque jour. » La Russie continue de priver les enfants ukrainiens de leur enfance.
We can definitely fight from Canada and one of our strongest weapons from here is fighting disinformation and continuing to spread the truth and horrible facts about this unprovoked war, which is exactly the mission of the NGO Ukraine-2050. I encourage all of you to become members of Ukraine 2050 to fight together the Ukrainian war against disinformation. Whenever you witness false information on social media, all you must do is submit a form, with the source and the article in question. Like my father, Eugene Czolij, has mentioned during many presentations, we must continue to talk about the war, to publicize it in our circles, in order for it not to become old news and forgotten by the media in western society.
In order to do so, we can be inspired by Father Jean’s activism. During and after the Second World War, Father Jean was very active politically. He was not afraid to speak up to defend the rights of Ukrainians, advocating for justice and peace as well as for Ukrainian independence.
He also worked as an interpreter and military chaplain in the army. A parallel with today’s situation, when Father Jean returned to Canada, he continued his activism by helping Ukrainian immigrants settle in their new country; having learned (by choice!) the Ukrainian language, he then taught Ukrainian to young children in order for younger generations to know their origins, roots and their culture. What truly stands out during his whole inspiring life journey is his perseverance, his passion and resilience to keep fighting for what he believed in.
Через його надзвичайну працю, наша парафія вирішила створити Фундацію імені о. Йосафата Жана котра вже існує від 1963 p. Дякуємо членам комітету за їхню невтомну працю. Розширюючи свою підтримку для студентів-біженців, Фундація o. Жана таким чином продовжує спадщину нашого o. Жана, який також допомагав українським студентам під час війни. Дякуємо громаді, учителям, виховникам і особлива подяка батькам, котрі подбали щоби ми, будучи третє або старше покоління, знали більше про наше походження. Як Тарас Шевченко нас учив: чужого научайтесь але свого не цурайтесь!
I’d like to finish by telling you about a very beautiful moment that I witnessed this summer, when I was volunteering at a homeless shelter in Quebec City. This centre offers a warm supper for 25 cents. Another option for people is to come earlier during the day and do a task (such as cleaning the tables, mopping the floor, disinfecting the bathrooms) in exchange for a dinner coupon. However, those tickets are limited to a certain number per day. And so, at dinner time, one older homeless man received several coupons because he had been chosen to accomplish some of those tasks. A few minutes after having received his coupons, I noticed the older man going to other people, tapping on their shoulder with a big smile on his face, and offering them the few tickets he had just received. I decided to go up to him and ask, «Monsieur, vous êtes en train de donner vos coupons pour le souper?» I will never forget the moment when he looked into my eyes and said: «I had a good lunch today, so I’ll give these coupons to people that need this supper more than I do». This act of selfless generosity touched my heart and taught me a valuable lesson about solidarity.
Щоб перевести це в наше життя, я знаю, що наше навчання дуже коштовне, але якщо це взагалі можливо у вашій ситуації, я хотіла запропонувати, давайте пожертвуємо частину нашої стипендії українцям, які потребують цей купон більше, ніж ми сьогодні.

Сьогодні ми відзначаємо свято тих, хто хоче змінити світ на краще. Я вітаю всіх стипендіатів Фундації імені отця Йосафата Жана і бажаю Вам подальших успіхів. Ви – спадкоємці України, її сила, її голос, її імідж, успішно долаєте виклики сучасного світу та відіграєте важливу роль у житті української громади. Великий уклін Фундації та її щедрим жертводавцям за підтримку і величезний внесок у освіту української молоді.
Community, in my opinion, is a powerful instrument in shaping people’s values. Communities are built of people who believe they are a part of something greater than themselves, who are passionate about the same goal, who support and empower each other. Відчуття цієї community, коли люди зі спільними інтересами та цілями самостійно об’єднуються і створють щось для себе та суспільства, – це і є тою рушійною силою у формуванні самоідентичності та розвитку громади. Un sentiment d’appartenance est ce qui nous lie a la myriade des relations que nous forgeons. C’est dans la communauté qu’on trouve du support dans des situations difficiles et on atteint un sain équilibre du bien-être physique et mental.
Саме такою я побачила українську громаду у Канаді. Приїхавши у Монреаль кілька років тому і незнаючи тут нікого, я знайшла друзів та однодумців в українській громаді. Я займалася цікавими проектами в СУМі, співпрацювала з українськими суботніми школами, волонтерила на Українському Фестивалі. That is when I understood why Ukrainian Community in Canada is one of the most influential and dynamic Ukrainian diasporas in the world – it is all thanks to the immerse work of its members!
Цікаво, що молодь активно долучається до українських організацій. Починаючи з перших днів української церкви, садочку, СУМу, Пласту та інших організацій в українській громаді, у дітей формується розуміння того, що це означає бути українкою чи українцем. Вони виростають у середовищі, де не тільки їхні мама чи тато, бабця чи дідо, брати чи сестри є українцями, але також їхні друзі, вчителі, виховники, наставники, а найголовніше – талановита молодь, яка є джерелом енергії для дітей та прикладом для наслідування. Рік за роком, згуртована українська громада виховує покоління лідерів, які стають успішними науковцями, бізнесменами, громадськими діячами чи займають високі посади в уряді. Таких лідерів об’єднує Фундація імені отця Йосафата Жана сьогодні.
Українська діаспора залишається підгрунтям для популяризації української культури та формуванні позитивного іміджу України у світі. Нас поважатимуть лише тоді, коли ми будемо гордими зі свого, гордими тим, що ми українці. Адже Україна багата своєю тисячолітньою історією, розмаїта культурою і традиціями, яку українська громада не тільки зуміла зберегти і розвинути, але і заангажувати представників інших національностей у свої ряди, навчила їх танцювати гопака, співати Червону Руту та вітатися українською мовою. Це сприяло зближенню канадського та українського народів, розвитку міжнародного співробітництва на різних рівнях, стало базою для культурного діалогу та інтеграції української культури у світовий кульутрний простір.
Адже… ми творимо майбутнє, незабуваючи минуле.
В останню суботу листопада українці відзначають на міжнародному рівні День Пам’яті Жертв Голодомору 1932-33 років, масових політичних репресій і примусових виселень. Завдяки наполегливій роботі української діаспори, попри серйозні труднощі та перешкоди, Голодомор визнано як національну трагедію українського народу на світовому рівні, а парламенти 11 країн світу, в тому числі і Канади, визнали Голодомор актом геноциду українського народу. Це тільки підкреслює силу української діаспори на світовому рівні, і показує наскільки згуртованість та взаємопідтримка у громаді допомагає у співпраці з урядами інших країн. Необхідно поширювати інформацію про нашу історію, щоб зберегти повагу до тих, хто пожертвував усім.
We often look outside for inspiration, for someone we could call a hero. But truth is each of us has the potential to inspire others by staying true to our values.
Believe in yourself! Ви будете здивовані, скільки всього можна досягти, якщо просто повірити у себе. Build your confidence every day. Start with small tasks and begin to think big. When you believe that you have the capacity to build your own expert knowledge base, you will be willing to take upon challenging tasks, bring ambitious ideas and complete problematic projects. Focus on all the things you have to be grateful for, your family and friends, communities you connect to, your achievements and everything else that makes you unique, like this award that celebrates your accomplishments today.
Будьте наполегливими, рішучими, послідовними у своїх діях, впевнено ідіть до кінця, незважаючи на перешкоди. Quand tu apprends à voir les obstacles comme un tremplin à la place d’un fardeau, tu vas les apprécier et pas les éviter. Tu sauras comment les utiliser à ta faveur. Ne pense pas à la difficulté des obstacles, mais aux avantages.
Вставати рано вранці щосуботи після 5-денного робочого чи навчального тижня і йти до української школи, до СУМу чи Пласту, звучить дуже важко. Але замість того, щоб думати, наскільки це складно вставати вранці, подумате, скільки переваг Ви отримуєте перебуваючи в українській громаді. Надихайте себе та інших, об’єднуйте цікавих людей та однодумців навколо своєї ідеї, долучайтеся до проектів своїх однодумців, вчіться та розвивайтеся разом.
Your life will be infused with positive attitude and new experiences when you are surrounded by passionate people. They will empower you to keep the course even if it may not seem possible anymore. A team of fascinating people like the ones that are part of the Ukrainian community brings new ideas to the table that expand your intellectual recourses, enhance creativity, and make boring tasks more enjoyable.
Ставте перед собою амбітні цілі, постійно запитуйте чому і навіщо. Якщо Ви хочете стати господарем свого життя – вчіться мріяти, перетворювати мрію на мету, а мету втілювати в реальність. I have always been passionate about environment and I decided to dedicate my career to tackle climate change. In a year of lockdown and being unable to travel to conferences yet, I started looking into the on-line options. There were not many options available for PhD students like me. Hence, I have initiated and co-organized the First CIREQ Interdisciplinary PhD Student Symposium on Climate Change in virtual format. It was quite successful, so it became an annual conference now. The dream come true thanks to my determination, passionate teammates, and an incredible support from all the parties involved.
Цінуйте малі успіхи, будьте уважнішими і зосередженішими на своєму завданні. There would be less room for a mistake.
And most importantly, do not be afraid of mistakes! Адже не помиляється тільки той, хто нічого не робить. Mistakes are inevitable, but you can learn how to direct them into better decision making. Embrace them. Mistakes make you tougher, more courageous, they help you learn and evolve. In closing, these two years have been challenging years forcing us to successfully adjust to new realities. It is comforting to know that our families, friends, and the community have been there for us every step of the way, and we were there for them. I hope that we will continue to motivate and inspire each other in future endeavours, just as we have helped each other thrive throughout the years.

Всечестніший Отче, шановний Голово і члени komitety фундаціі імени отця Йосафата Жана, улюблені степендійці, дорогі родичі, родини та гості. Дякую за можливість говорити перед вами сьогодні вечір. Мені дуже приємно тут бути разом із вами на Zoom.
Although we cannot meet together in person this year, I am grateful that the Father Jean Committee has adapted quickly and made it possible for us to continue to celebrate the incredible students who continue to work hard despite the new challenges they are facing during this period of uncertainty. The coronavirus was unexpected and has changed every one of our lives. Some of you may have lost jobs. Some of you may have been separated from loved ones due to the virus. Those of us who can look back on this time and remember inconveniences and even boredom can count themselves lucky. Many of us will come to know real hardship and fear due to this virus. And while we turn to our loved ones and friends for comfort, please do not forget to think about those whose impact on your life is more distant, but no less meaningful. Think of the grocery store clerk who stocks our shelves with food and supplies. Think of the hospital orderly who scrubs down the wards to provide a clean and safe environment for patients. Think of the CYM volunteers across Canada who worked tirelessly this summer to build a virtual tabir from scratch in less than a few months, so that the children of the Ukrainian community could feel connected to one another during these dark times. Most of all, think about how you – blessed with an education – might act and work and be different when the virus has become but a distant memory. We must never forget these times when nurses and doctors were cheered on and celebrated as they left for their incredibly long shifts as if they were celebrities arriving at a red-carpet event. We must never forget these times which have revealed what really matters: the health and well-being of our loved ones, the resilience of our communities and the sacrifices made by those serving others.
The pandemic forced us to slow down to receive this amazing gift and blessing of more time. More time to reconnect with our families, more time for our mental and physical health, but most of all more time to reflect on our priorities in life. Time was flying by in our fast-paced lifestyles, but not anymore. This is what was needed to prepare us for the future. This is what we needed to teach us the hard way that we are all equal no matter where we come from or who we are. This is what we needed to break our complacency with the status quo and to illuminate the opportunities for change in our communities. This generation is better positioned to challenge the way things have always been done and to seize the initiative to remake our world better than ever before.
We will not be defined by what we lost to this virus, but by how we responded to it. As the future generation of young professionals in this Ukrainian community and the larger global community, the world is yours to rebuild. As Bill Gates, Cofounder of Microsoft recently said, “as a member of our global community, your actions can have a global impact”. The world has changed. It is up to you, the next generation to show the world how to put the pieces back together and create a more evolved, kind and just world.
[French] Il y a plusieurs de façons dont nous pouvons être inspirés pour contribuer et aider à changer notre monde. En tant que jeunes Canadiens d’origine ukrainienne, je vous encourage à suivre l’exemple du père Josaphat Jean qui a défié les limites de ce que signifie être ukrainien et qui a choisi de consacrer sa vie à défendre l’Ukraine dans le monde entier dans les différents rôles qu’il a occupés, de l’aumônier militaire au représentant diplomatique à la Ligue des Nations. Savoir qui vous êtes et ce que vous représentez est un aspect important de la vie d’un Ukrainien. Cela vous guidera tout au long de votre vie.
[English]There are so many ways which we can be inspired to contribute and help change our world. As young Ukrainian Canadians, I encourage you to follow in the footsteps of Father Josaphat Jean who challenged the boundaries of what it means to be Ukrainian and chose to dedicate his life to advocating for Ukraine all over the world in all the various roles that he occupied from military chaplain to diplomatic representative at the League of Nations. Knowing who you are and what you stand for is an important part of being Ukrainian. This will guide you throughout your life.
Your career paths may change over time and you will hold different roles with varying degrees of responsibility throughout your professional life, however the values and beliefs that have been instilled in you through your upbringing and involvement in the Ukrainian community will guide you when it’s time to stand up and fight. Fight for the job you want, fight for a cause that you believe in or fight for the world you want to live in. As a Ukrainian Canadian involved in this rich community, you have acquired experiences, skills and qualities that define you. That are invaluable assets and unique to your person. Cherish them, be cognizant of them, utilize them to enhance and be a contributing member of our Ukrainian community and your global network.
[Ukrainian] Я багато років працювала при українські громаді із молодими. Я відповіла як виговниця, бунчужна, булавна та директорка табору Суменят підчас таборів. Я брала участь в українських організацій, таких як СУМ, оркестра Трембіта та Український танцювальний ансамбль Марунчак – щоб вичислити декілька. З молодих років, я зрозуміла важливість віддати свої сили до праці в українські громаді бо я оцінювала важливість Української громади у моєму життю.
[English] I have spent many years working in the community with Ukrainian youth. I have held many roles such as camp counselor (vyhovnyk), camp leader (bonchujna) and camp director (sumeniata). I have been involved in numerous organisations such as CYM, Trembita Orchestra and Marunczak Ukrainian Dance Ensemble, to name a few. I always understood from a younger age the importance of giving back to my community because I always appreciated the importance of the Ukrainian community in my own life, but especially in my childhood.
The Ukrainian community not only provided me with a safe environment to learn and grow as an individual, but it provided me with some pretty amazing role models to look up to. These role models were the counselors, the parents involved in uprava or just as volunteers on Saturdays at shkola and shodyny, the guest speakers from all over the world, the leaders from other oseredoks across Canada and many others. I was recently asked to explain what makes my involvement in the Ukrainian community such a unique experience compared to my involvement in any other non-Ukrainian organizations. I had to think about it for a few seconds, but then a memory came to mind of a conversation I once had many years ago with Pan Michael Shwec at a zlet in the United States. It was after a full day of competitions and a couple of the vyhovnyky were sitting around talking with Pan Shwec. We were discussing the importance of continuing to organize zlet every year for the kids; for them to network and to meet other Ukrainian youth from all over the world. At one point, Pan Shwec turned to me and said something to the effect of, “Do you realize that you are a role model for these young girls that are in your rij, that they look up to you and you are helping mould them into the people that they are today and will become in the future”. This comment had a lasting impact on me. I never fully realized until that moment that I might be becoming a role model like the ones that I looked up to when I was a child for these girls. This carried a certain weight of importance and gave me a sense of duty to continue my community involvement. This torch of responsibility is carried and passed on from one generation to the next, creating a long line of children that are raised to be role models for the next generation. I cannot think of something that is more special or important than that, especially in a world like today’s that is in need of positive role models with so many people in positions of power that do not act as an example for younger generations.
I would like to conclude my speech by thanking the hard-working individuals that make all this possible. Thank you to the Father Jean Scholarship Foundation for continuing to validate the hard work of students in their academic endeavours and community involvement over the past 57 years. Thank you to the committee members who take the time out of their busy schedules to raise funds, select candidates and organize the Father Jean Scholarship Awards. Thank you to the village of people that it takes to help raise and support each and every one of us that is being honoured here this evening. A special thank you to the parents who provided their unwavering support and could always be counted on for their unconditional love and guidance. None of this would be possible without you. You are the pillars without which we could not stand and you provide us with a foundation that is strong and solid to build our lives on.
To the students – I ask that you take away the three following points from my speech tonight. First, get involved in your community even if it is not in the same capacity or role as in the past. The roles which we will take on in our professional and our community lives will evolve over time as our skills and interests develop. My advice is to be open to change. Do not be afraid to try something new. Second, be a role model for the younger generation. As the saying goes, “with great power, comes great responsibility”. Be responsible in how you exercise the power of your voice. Be someone that younger generations can aspire to be and use as their guide post. Always be cognizant of the fact that you might just be looked up to as a role model by someone younger and not even realize it. Last but not least, always be proud of your Ukrainian heritage and all that it has afforded you. Do not hesitate to blend the Ukrainian and non-Ukrainian parts of your life, to introduce your friends and co-workers to your Ukrainian culture or to utilize your education and career to help support Ukraine or Ukrainian causes.
Congratulations to the recipients of 2020! I wish you success in your future endeavours and I look forward to seeing everyone again in person once this is all over.
